As a stay at home mom, weeks can be long and days can be mundane, especially during winter in the Midwest. My husband plays in two different men’s leagues every week so it’s difficult to schedule something in the evenings because the days and times of his sports change every week. I’ve tried to block off me-time but it doesn’t always work or I cancel on myself all too often. I know it’s important to take care of myself but the time available always seems to go towards someone or something else. Why do we put ourselves on the back burner?!
New Years mindset shift, I need to carve out time just for me and recharge my batteries, away from the home and never-ending tasks. I’ve recently gotten back into watching The Bachelor after taking a several year hiatus, mostly because a group of my girlfriends get together to watch it. It’s been 3 weeks and honestly, it’s helped immensely to kick off the week on a fun note! We trade off hosting and bring snacks/wine (13 more weeks until I can join!) and mostly chat while providing colorful commentary on the show. It’s such a simple concept but I’m really enjoying a night with the girls on a school night, nonetheless!
Last week I booked myself a prenatal massage with a gift card I had gotten for Christmas. Instead of scheduling it during nap time on a weekend I opted for a weekday morning and had grandma come babysit. It felt so luxurious to get out during a weekday for myself, aside from just running errands or getting things done around the house. (Wish I could make this a weekly routine!)
Whether it’s a workout class, night out with girlfriends, or just scheduling a fun routine on a specific day of the week (nails and face mask maybe), I highly recommend starting something. Even though nights are “ours” after kids go to bed, it’s not quite the same as having something out of the ordinary to look forward to. It also helps to have it scheduled with your spouse so it’s not as easily canceled.
Do you have a self-care routine that you stick to every week? I would love to know!
